The Social Health Authority (SHA) is Kenya's national health insurer. As a Level 5 hospital, we accept SHA for your admission, maternity care, surgery and more - here is how it works.
SHA replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) as Kenya's universal health coverage scheme, established under the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) is the State corporation that replaced NHIF to deliver Universal Health Coverage to every Kenyan. All residents - employed, self-employed, informal sector workers and their dependants - are required to register and contribute to the scheme.
SHA organises cover into three funds so that the right services are paid for by the right pool of money - from simple primary care right through to expensive, life-saving treatment. At Consolata Hospital Kyeni (a Level 5 facility), you can access your inpatient and maternity benefits under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Once you are a registered, up-to-date member you can use your cover at our main hospital in Kyeni and, for outpatient services, at our Kibugua and Makima branches.
Preventive, promotive and basic care - consultations, screening and maternity services at Level 2 and 3 primary health facilities.
Hospital care at Levels 3 to 6 - including inpatient admission, maternity, surgery, renal care, mental health and laboratory and imaging services.
Emergency and ambulance services, chronic disease management and high-cost treatment for critical and life-threatening conditions.
Using your SHA cover at a Level 5 hospital is straightforward. Here is the journey from arrival to discharge.
Report to our registration desk with your National ID. We verify your SHA membership electronically using your SHA member number.
For inpatient and maternity care, your doctor admits you and we confirm your benefit package and cover with SHA before treatment.
SHA pays the hospital directly for covered services. Our billing team submits your claim so you only worry about your recovery.
For emergencies, the normal requirement to first visit your registered primary facility is waived. Come directly to our emergency department and we will verify your cover on arrival.
Registration is free for all Kenyans. Your monthly contribution keeps your cover (and your dependants' cover) active.
Registration itself is free. Please confirm the latest rates and procedures directly with SHA, as they are subject to change.
When you are admitted to our 280-bed Level 5 facility, your SHA inpatient benefit covers the full package of hospital care.
